by Annette Lucero

On this week’s edition of #SIMSLAM, we’d like to introduce Slam Academy’s latest team player: Scott LeGere. The former Music Business Department head at McNally Smith, Scott LeGere joined Slam shortly after McNally’s closure this past fall. Besides over 20+ years of generous industry experience, Scott LeGere brings with him Slam Academy’s latest debut, the Music Industry Program.

In the word’s of Slam Academy’s Recruitment Specialist, “Slam Academy has always offered students various vocational programs in music production and performance, and with the addition of the Music Industry Program, students can now round out their Slam Academy education with industry and career advancing concepts including copyright, business registration, marketing, and emerging revenue sources”.

Students will be able to both hone in and tailor their musical skill sets, while additionally learning the marketing discipline and entrepreneurial hunt it takes to sell one’s talent in both a professional and profitable manner. In today’s technological age, countless music platforms and streaming services are seeing a plethora of emerging talent every single day. If an artist wants their music to stand out, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that a good sound isn’t always enough. If you’re curious to learn more, or to give the class a trial run, Slam Academy will be offering a free two-hour introduction class on Tuesday, April 10th, 2018 at 11 am. Scott Legere will be leading the course – did we mention he’s engineered Grammy-nominated albums, and worked alongside Prince?

At this point and time, it’s safe to say that most of us have heard the infamous “Panda” song by Desiigner. The great news is that Desiigner is making a stop to the Armory as a special guest for Steve Aoki alongside Quintino and other Dim Mak guests!

Sidney Royel Selby III, better known as his stage name Desiigner, started off his career in 2015 under various aliases, such as Dezolo and Designer Royel. Once he settled on Desiigner, he released his first track in late 2015, called “Zombie Walk” however, it wasn’t until the next year when he released his single “Panda” that brought him to fame. Soon after, he signed with Def Jam Recordings, a large hip-hop record label.

Later the same year in 2016, Desiigner released his debut mixtape album, called “New English”. The album had 14 tracks, with some being short mixes, showed off his style and sounds. His rapping style and vocals are often compared to famous rapper, Future; however, Desiigner flaunts his own artistic techniques in his music, such as the infamous “tongue roll” that appears in all of his songs.

Desiigner has worked with many different artists of different styles, including BTS, a korean pop boy band, as well as Steve Aoki, who most recently remixed Desiigner and BTS’ song, “Mic Drop” that has received notable attention.

Desiigner will be making his way to Minneapolis with headliner Steve Aoki and other guests like Quintino and Dim Mak artists Bad Royale, Max Styler, and Box Nero! It’s a show you won’t want to miss. Who’s ready to get #caked?

Gabriel & Dresden @ Rev 2/16/18

by Bradley Loiederman

Calling all trance fans! The duo Gabriel & Dresden is heading to REV as part of their tour for their latest album, “The Only Road”. The pair go far back, to 2001, when they met as separate artists at the Winter Music Conference in Miami. Since then, they have produced some of the most iconic dance tracks, such as “Tracking Treasure Down” and “Waiting For Winter”, one of their most recent top hit songs.

Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden produce music together as the duo known as Gabriel & Dresden. They made their rise to fame together with their first album, “Bloom” in 2004. They also received notable attention after their remix of Above & Beyond’s “No One on Earth” won “Top Trance Track of the Year”.

Despite their successes, the two had their ups and downs; in 2008, they decided to part ways and work on individual projects, with Josh starting a new record label and releasing solo albums, and Dave working with different artists on remixes and singles.

Their solo endeavors continued for two years, until New Year’s Eve in 2010, when they reunited and played a special set in Los Angeles. Since this moment, they have played together at some of the largest festivals, such as Electric Daisy Carnival, Tomorrowland, Electric Zoo, and many more.

One of Gabriel & Dresden’s latest career gain was getting signed under Above & Beyond’s record label, Anjunabeats. The announcement came out at Above & Beyond’s “Group Therapy 250”, held at the Gorge Amphitheater this past fall. Another pivotal moment of Gabriel & Dresden’s career is the release of their latest album, “The Only Road”. This album represents their monumental return as a duo, and features various styles, such as trance, progressive house, as well as some down-tempoed songs. The tracks, “Waiting For Winter” and “This Love Kills”, are two of their most recent and biggest hits, being featured on many different trance radio shows by some of the most well-known trance artists, such as Above & Beyond, Armin Van Buuren, Cosmic Gate and Ferry Corsten, to list a few.

Gabriel & Dresden are stopping into Minneapolis on their “The Only Road Tour” this Friday at REV Ultra Lounge! You don’t want to miss this show; it’ll be a show full of feel-good music. Tickets are still available for purchase here!

Kayzo @ Skyway Theatre 2/17/18

by Bradley Loiederman

Flashback to your Myspace scene kid days that were taken over screamo and mosh pits. Now take that sound and apply it to EDM – that’s where you’ll meet Kayzo. Based in LA, Kayzo combines hardcore, trap, and dubstep qualities to create a powerful, intimidating sound of extreme bass. He’ll be drilling his Overload Tour with 4B, Dubloadz, Gammar, and JSTJR into Skyway Theatre this Saturday 2/17!

Originally hailing from Houston, Hayden Capuozzo, aka Kayzo, bit at the first chance he got to move to LA and begin his career as a producer. He got his start in 2012 when he began attending Icon Collective, the prestigious production and DJ school in LA. In just nine months, he graduated and was chosen as the winner of Insomniac’s “Discovery Project” challenge. This gave Kayzo an opportunity to play at Escape from Wonderland and helped him jumpstart his career in bass music. Throughout the first few years of his career, he worked closely with Dim Mak, Firepower, Buygore, and Ministry of Sound before focusing on his own creation, Doghouse Recordings.

In 2016, Kayzo decided to move to the next step in his career and start his own label called Doghouse Recordings. While the label only features his self-released tracks, he sees Doghouse being a label for everything different regardless of style, sound, or tempo. Kayzo’s doghouse brand of being innovative, unique, and grimy resonates with fans all the while keeping true to his art. Less than one month ago, Kayzo dropped his debut album, “Overload” – and now it’s time to see what this frontrunner can do live!

Kayzo is extremely unique and creative while being an artist that can go harder than most. Make sure to check out his Overload Tour with 4B, Dubloadz, Gammar, and JSTJR at Skyway Theatre this Saturday! Tickets are available here.
