Charlie Yin, known as Giraffage, might not be on everyone’s musical radar but the San Francisco native has certainly been creating a name for himself over the last year. Having already toured with the likes of Flume, XXYYXX, Slow Magic and now providing support for Porter Robinson, it can only get better for the 24 year old musical talent.
Charlie started making music back in high school as a way to escape the boring routines of school. Heavily influenced by video games, he began producing music under the alias Robot Science; where 8-bit sounds were a hallmark in his tracks. However, having made the switch to his now present moniker, a lot of his music is sample-based. Anything is fair game as far as he is concerned – he’s sampled things from Britney Spears acapellas to weird 80s infomercials he finds on YouTube.
His most notable release was his album ‘Needs.’ Its rare to hear a cohesive body of music these days when all everyone is doing is releasing singles. But ‘Needs’ authenticity can not only be heard but felt as well. Charlie actually wrote the album while attending UC Berkeley, but describes his time at school as a low point in his life.
Recently, Charlie has signed with A-trak’s Fool’s Gold Record label, which is a massive achievement. Word has it that a new Giraffage EP is in the works! It might not be the same sample-based productions we are used to hearing, but one thing is for sure – Charlie never disappoints.
