With EDM being a relatively young genre, it’s always astonishing to find producers that have been creating amazing tracks since before many of us were born. However, Paul Oakenfold is definitely one! Starting in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Paul Oakenfold is credited for being one of the creators of trance music, as well as signing and promoting some of the biggest names to ever come out of electronic music. After more than two years of waiting, Paul Oakenfold will be returning back to his small-club roots in Minneapolis on July 16th at Rev Ultra Lounge!
Born in 1963, Paul Oakenfold was the son of a musician and starting gaining his own interest in music while spinning funk in Covent Garden in the late 1970s. His career started taking off in the early 80s after spending a few months living in New York. While in New York, Oakenfold worked as an A&R Rep for Champion Records and signed artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff and Salt-n-Pepa. After continuing his work in the business side of things as a promoter and agent, Oakenfold took a trip to Ibiza in 1987 and brought back that sound to the UK, throwing parties at different clubs throughout London and producing under the alias “Electra”. He quickly gained residencies across the UK, most notably at the Ministry of Sound in London and Cream in Liverpool, and in 1988, he created Perfecto Records and has since released tracks and albums from the likes of BT, Carl Cox, Tilt, Robert Vadney, and many more. As the popularity of his remixes and residencies grew more and more throughout the world, some of the biggest artists of the time started taking notice of him. In fact, he was hired by U2 to create warm-up sonics for their world tour in 1993. Since then, Oakenfold has worked with artists such as Rihanna, Madonna, Cher, Brittany Murphy, Movement 98, and many more! To add to his success, Oakenfold has also seen three Grammy nominations since the start of his career and has been put as DJ Mag’s number one DJ of the year twice! And although Oakenfold was one of the first artists to play the festival in the United States, his live success surely goes past the normal festival circuit! Although he performed at some of the first EDM festivals in the US, such as Cyberfest 2000, Area Festival, and the Mekka Electronic Music Festival, he has also performed where no other DJ had performed before, such as the Great Wall of China, the Hollywood Bowl, and supporting Madonna and U2 on three world tours! Paul Oakenfold is one of the most influential and iconic members of the electronic scene, making his intimate set at Rev all the more exciting!
What makes Paul Oakenfold such a fascinating producer is his ability to blend together all his experience in the entertainment industry into his music.
