This last Saturday night, 5 DJ’s and a grip of music lovers packed Minneapolis’ Cabooze on the West Bank for the Red Bull Thre3style Qualifier.  Much like a busy bee-hive, the Cabooze was absolutely buzzing.  Although the initial line had already dwindled by 10pm (very thankfully so, as it was FREEZING out), there was nowhere to park, even within blocks of the venue; the place was absolutely packed.  DJ’s competed for various cash prizes and ultimate bragging rights, as well as an opportunity to potentially compete in the Red Bull Thre3style World Finals in December.  At stake there will be the title of Red Bull Thre3style National Champion.

Mike 2600, Shannon Blowtorch, DJ Bach, DJ Mad Mardigan, and D-Mil went head-to-head, with each having 15 minutes to showcase their skills and styles.  The DJ’s were posed with the challenge of playing at least three different genres of music, and were judged on track selection, creativity, mixing skills, scratching skills, stage presence and crowd reaction.  There was definitely nothing lacking in the creativity department.  If you were there, you heard anything from rap to trap, hip-hop to bass drops, and even some James Brown and Michael Jackson.  The execution of stage presence left nothing to be desired, either.  From making goofy comments during introductory videos to throwing rolls of toilet paper into the sea of people, the DJ’s definitely did their part to keep the crowd excited and raging-onward.

Many congrats are in order for Mike2600, who won the competition, with DJ Mad Mardigan coming in second, and DJ D-Mil receiving the title of third place.  First place also won a nice prize of $5,000. Second place received $2,000 and 3rd received $1,000. All 5 DJ’s elicited creative and diverse styles and kept the place packed and dancing the entire night.  Thanks as well to Red Bull for providing the opportunity to the Twin Cities music community.  So what’s next for these DJ’s? Well, for Mike2600, likely some practice and anticipation as he moves forward in the competition!
