The Throes of Winter Tour – Seven Lions @ Skyway Theater 4/24
by Jennifer K Johnson

Who is “Seven Lions”? Well, he’s a character in a science fiction novel titled Latro in the Mist by Gene Wolfe—he’s also a highly successful producer from California. Following his namesake, Seven Lions creates music with an element of fantasy to it. His music takes the listener on a journey across galaxies, to a universe far from this one.

He initially started out as a metal drummer. There was no profound moment that made him switch to EDM. He explains,

“For me, it was the most accessible thing, to start picking up something like drums as opposed to something like electronic music. My transition out of playing with a band was because I got tired of waiting for my band all the time — I wanted to just start making music so I started composing electronic music by myself ,”

His remix of Above & Beyond’s “You Got To Go” in 2011 was his breakthrough track. It remained #2 on Beatport’s Dubstep chart for six weeks. He released his first EP Polarize the following year and was quickly signed to OWSLA, a vanity record label founded by Skrillex

Seven Lions has produced three EPs since signing with OWSLA: Days to Come (2012), Worlds Apart (2014), and the most recent EP, The Throes of Winter (2015). Each EP has garnered a lot of buzz, popularity, and positive feedback.

“Strangers (feat. Tove Lo),” one of the tracks on Worlds Apart, was featured on the soundtrack for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones film.

His latest EP, The Throes of Winter, was just released in March. The EP continues to gain popularity and positive feedback. It features many talented vocalists, such as Davey Havok of AFI.

With the combination of powerful vocalists and Seven Lion’s production, each track delivers an emotional experience for the listener. It ranges from a romantic song, like “Lose Myself,” to the heart-jerking “A Way to Say Goodbye.”

It’s hard to pick a favorite from this EP, though I favor “The End” a little bit more than the others. Check it out!

Seven Lions has performed at several major festivals including Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, TomorrowWorld, Electric Zoo, and many more!
