Shpongle, who (on US tours) is composed of Simon Posford, is a psychedelic music project based out of the UK whose music blends together world elements with electronic deformities. With his spectacular performances in Minneapolis for the past four years, he is coming back on Friday, March 27th to bring The Skyway Theater to another dimension!
In 1996, Simon Posford and Raja Ram came together to create a completely new psybient project, something that had never been heard before. Their first track, “Vapour Rumors”, was released in 1996 on a TIP Records’ compilation. After extreme success in the psybient and psytrance communities with that release, Shpongle then released their debut album, “Are You Shpongled?” in 1998 on Twisted Records. They have since released five other acclaimed albums on Twisted and have announced the creation of a sixth album, further bringing you into a new realm with every eye-opening track.
It is very easy to argue that Shpongle is one of the most groundbreaking artists in the Psybient genre. Not only are they one of the first artists of the genre, but their use of many different world influences makes their music both mind-blowing and highly fascinating. Take Shpongle’s “Divine Moments of Truth” as an example. Within in the first three minutes of the 10-minute track, you hear Tuvan throat singing from Mongolia, wind chimes and woodwind instruments from Eastern Asia, and percussion sequences from Africa. All of this is blended together with electronic elements to create a song that is both thematically beautiful and easy to groove to.
Not only will your ears be transcended into vibrant melody with Shpongle’s music, but your eyes will glow with fragrant colors and morphing shapes with Shpongle’s live show, Shpongletron 3.1! Shpongletron 3.1 is a massive psychedelic machine that Shpongle brought into their live show during their last tour. With some improvements and changes in the mechanics, Shpongletron 3.1 will transport you from Skyway Theater’s dance floor to another planet full of bright lights, strange creatures, and pure glee. Get a taste of what Shpongletron has to bring below!
