When Sub Focus first heard one of his own tracks inside of a club in 2003 (“Strobe”, dropped by legendary Andy C), little did he know that he would be headlining Glastonbury 7 years later in 2010. Sub Focus has surely risen from the Jungle underground to be one of the most key players in the electronic music scene today. He made his initial mark with his fierce, fist-pumpingly good Drum and Bass productions and has since evolved in a well-rounded artist creating music of all genres.
Originally a bass player in a high school rock band, his first introduction to the world of dance music was his encounter with Jungle music. He fell in love instantly. One of his biggest influences at this time became the group The Prodigy – who were experimenting with the melding of rock and dance music in unheard-of and exciting ways. Sub Focus quickly lost interest in his studies and began spending most of his time in his bedroom, creating music.
Sub Focus’ later, and hugely, successful career came from a solitary drunken act by a friend who handed one of Sub Focus’ tracks, burned onto a CD:R, to Andy C while at a party in 2003. Shortly thereafter, he was signed onto Drum & Bass’ biggest label, Ram Records. The bass legend, Andy C was so impressed that he duly signed every one of Sub Focus’ tracks and invited him to join the Ram family. His tracks were so energetic, fierce, and creative that they quickly stood out in the scene and were soon being played by some of the world’s most well-known DJs, as well as being played on mainstream radio stations. Tracks such as “Airplane, “X-Ray”, and his remix of The Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up” would launch Sub Focus into the spotlight of being one of the biggest names in the Drum & Bass scene.
After his quickly acquired success, Sub Focus decided it was time to make an album. He knew that he didn’t want to be pigeon-holed into being a one-dimensional, one-genre artist, so he really pushed himself to encompass multiple avenues of dance music, from 80’s synth to Futuristic House and Techno, as well as Dubstep, Breakbeats, Electro and Rock. His self-titled debut album, released in 2009, piqued the interest of infamous stars such as Deadmau5, Empire of the Sun and Dizzee Rascal who were then calling upon him to do exclusive remixes of their tracks.
Sub Focus is a pivotal player in the electronic dance music scene due to his barrier breaking music that breaches the confinements of genre-labeling walls. He encompasses all categories of electronic music and wields them together into a harmonious, luminous melting pot that is sure to be a pleasure to all ears. He’s conquered Drum & Bass, created a ground-breaking, era-defining album, and brought the spotlight onto New School Dance Music.
