Summer 2017 Recap
by Bradley Loiederman

Days are getting shorter, students are moving back into their dorms, and clothing stores are bringing back their fall attire; the summer is coming to an end. As you’re getting over that final festie flu and starting to come back to autumn reality, let’s recap on the great summer of 2017!

The Armory

One of the biggest announcements in Minnesota music came a few weeks ago with the reveal of The Armory! Opening up in December, The Armory is an 8,400 capacity venue that will bring a new kind of event space to downtown Minneapolis. Owner and developer Ned Abdul plans for the venue to hold events everywhere from concerts, sporting events, theater, and more. Being across the street from the new Vikings stadium, The Armory will also host the NFL-licensed events “Nomadic Live”, which featured artists such as Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars last year.

Shortly after the news leaked about The Armory’s opening, another huge announcement came out of the woodwork: SIMShows’ owner and buyer Jack “JT” Trash will be one of the key buyers and managers of the venue! From putting on warehouse raves in the 90s to creating one of the biggest EDM festivals in the Midwest, JT is a magician at what he does and has over 20 years of experience to back it up. There have already been two colossal events announced at The Armory with many more to come, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled on both the SIMShows lineup and The Armory lineup.

Summer Set

As summer dwindles down to a close, we’d like to take the time to look back on this year’s round of Summer Set highlights. Attendees this year got to experience the carnival vibes of a pop-up circus, all the while cruising through deep vendor tents and hot foodie spots. Personal favorites ranged from the Mike’s Hard Lemonade tent and riding their shark, to the lit barside in VIP. What’s more, we can’t forget to mention the amplitude of pop-up stages this year. Saturday saw Guggenz, Megan Hamilton and Lwky on the Manic Focus stage, joined by ringleader Manic Focus himself. If you got lucky enough to catch this stage tucked away between North and South campground, you know the funk was real! Sunday saw Griz hop on with Shooka for a grimy b2b, debuting their side project “The Shiz” to Summer Setters! Boogie T and Sunsquabi further funked down the stage throughout the day; it’s All Good to say Griz’s label came through on Sunday. No one was ready for the insane surprises that came out of the pop-up stages this year, and this year was just a taste for what’s to come!

Of course, we cannot forget to mention some of our favorite moments from the after parties this year. Friday night saw JT&T open up with a stellar performance, soon to have the bar re-set by none other than Illenium himself. Saturday night saw Manic Focus cruise into a dirty set, with Louis the Child and surprise guest Whethan taking over and setting The Grove on fire. We’d like to thank our Summer Set family for coming out this year and partying it up; veterans and new friends alike made the crowd vibes one of the most memorable to date.

Rev Summer Shows

While local shows definitely saw a slow-down with festie season in full force, the few that occurred were some of littest Rev shows we’ve seen in a while! This summer saw an explosion in the Minneapolis trance community, with trance legends Sean Tyas and Arty rebranding Rev as a midwest trance destination. Shiba San swung by mid summer and seasoned the streets of downtown with some ghetto funk, and local Djs kept that house spinning all through the summer! Didn’t catch a show this summer? Well make sure to check out our fall lineup featuring Carnage, Darude, Gryffin, and many other talented artists. And keep an eye out on our socials; rumor has it that we’re not even close to down with fall announcements.
