I don’t know about you all, but after the first few weeks of the semester and the stress that comes with the start of September, I need a show that will both bring some extremely positive vibes as well as slam some energy into my spine. And boy, will Wiwek and Bad Royale do that this Friday! Although coming from completely different parts of the world, Wiwek and Bad Royale are about to slam Minneapolis with some trap subgenres that you never thought were possible. They will be transforming The Loft into a never-sleeping Amazon rainforest this Friday, 9/16!
Hailing from The Netherlands, Wiwek has been emphasized for creating his own subgenre of trap while still being featured as a groundbreaking trap artist by many of the biggest artists in the scene! Growing up in an Indian family, Wiwek was exposed to traditional Indian music at a young age and quickly started experimenting with adding traditional hand drums and kick drums into electronic music. By 2011, his tracks were getting featured in playlists created by DJs such as Tiesto and Fedde Le Grand. In 2012, he created his own record label, RIMBU, alongside producer Gregor Salto, and has since released numerous tracks under his own label as well as Mad Decent, Spinnin’ Records, and Barong Family. He signed to OWSLA this year and released The Free and Rebellious EP, which was used as the soundtrack to the film, Still In The Cage. Moreover, his track on the EP with Skrillex, titled “Killa”, has become one of the biggest anthems of 2016 and landed Wiwek recognition on MTV! Wiwek’s “jungle terror” sound, combining traditional Indian characteristics with EDM, has quickly brought him from small town Netherlands to the international spotlight.
Contrary to Wiwek’s “started from the bottom and is now here” story, Bad Royale’s comeup is one most people would not expect from a heavy trap group. When you listen to Bad Royale’s music, you expect a group of bass-heavy guys working hard to blur the lines between trap and dub with progressive influences between the lines. You would not expect, however, a group of three trance producers and a non-producer coming together and creating music as a form of rent payment; and yet, that’s exactly how Bad Royale was formed! Bad Royale is composed of trance producers Maor Levi, Kevin Wild, and Bruce Karlsson, as well as housemate Elias Ghosn. Back in 2014, they moved together under one roof and started producing trap music together, bringing Elias in to manage the Bad Royale brand. Only two years later, and they have released numerous tracks under Mad Decent and Buygore and have played festivals such as Ultra, LIC, Lollapalooza, and Mad Decent Pool Party. And like Wiwek, they are credited for creating their own genre, dubbed Caribbean Bass, which blends tropical elements with heavy trap and bass music. Bad Royale’s unconventional start has brought them some significant startup attention, and their signature sound and group personality continues to bring them further and further up the trap latter!
Although Wiwek and Bad Royale differ in both startup stories and sound, together they will create an extremely well-rounded show that’s sure to shake the foundation of The Loft! So if you need that jolt of energy and glee to get you through the rest of September, or if you’re just trying to legitimately dance the pants off yourself, make sure to check out Wiwek and Bad Royale at The Loft this Friday!
